Food and Nutrition (Elective Option - HFN1O)
This course focuses on healthy lifestyle choices:
- Students will learn the importance of proper sleep patterns, exercise, and healthy food options.
- The class will investigate factors that influence food choices, including beliefs, attitudes, current trends, traditional eating patterns,
- Food-marketing strategies, and individual needs.
- Students are provided with opportunities to develop food-preparation skills by participating in food labs.
- Using the Canadian Food Guide, students will learn how to make healthy meals on a budget.

TFJ20 – Tourism and Hospitality – Grade 10 open level course. This course provides students with opportunities to explore different areas of hospitality and tourism, as reflected in the various sectors of the tourism industry, with an emphasis on food service. Students will study culinary techniques of food handling and preparation, health and safety standards, the use of tools and equipment, the origins of foods, and event planning, and will learn about tourism attractions across Ontario. Students will develop an awareness of related environmental and societal issues, and will explore secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the tourism industry.
HFC3M/E – Food and Culture. This course focuses on the flavours, aromas, cooking techniques, foods, and cultural traditions of world cuisines. Students will explore the origins of and developments in diverse food traditions. They will demonstrate the ability to cook with ingredients and equipment from a variety of cultures, compare food-related etiquette in many countries and cultures, and explain how Canadian food choices and traditional have been influenced by other cultures. Students will develop practical skills and apply social science research methods while investigating foods and food practices from around the world.
